Why does a roof-vented dryer clog faster than a wall vent?

Gravity and distance. A roof cap sits at the end of 15 to 30 feet of vertical duct, plus elbows. Lint has to climb. The blower pushes it partway, then it falls back. The heaviest load collects at the first elbow where the duct turns up behind the dryer. That is the spot most people never see.

Desert dust changes the material. Laundry rooms pull in fine grit, and it binds with lint into a denser, grittier packing than humid-climate lint. Monsoon moisture drives into the cap and pastes that layer to the duct wall. A brush alone skates over it. We rod the run and pull debris by hand, working from both ends where access allows.

Plastic roof caps are the other failure point. Years of Arizona UV warp the damper shut or make it brittle. Spring brings birds and rodents nesting in roof and sidewall terminations. Both show the same symptom: towels needing two or three cycles, a hot laundry room, sometimes a burning smell.

Long roof runs, pets, or heavy laundry volume mean annual clearing. Short exterior-wall runs under eight feet in a small household stretch further between cleanings. If the duct behind your dryer is crushed flex in a shallow closet, cleaning alone won't fix the airflow.
